Dolphy to The Doors

And more great music, starting with Eric Dolphy, anding with The Doors.

Eric Dolphy – Eric Dolphy – This is a Prestige 2-fer from back in the day.  Originally, these were Outward Bound and Out There.  I absolutely love Eric Dolphy, and these records -as well as those to follow – are amazing examples of his playing, writing, arranging, brilliance.  It’s nice to hear George Duvivier in such an open setting, and to hear Ron Carter on cello.  However you get these recordings, they are “must own.”

Eric Dolphy – The Great Concert of Eric Dolphy – An incredible concert, but for me, Ed Blackwell is the stand-out on this one.  Not to say that Eric Dolphy, Mal Waldron and Richard Davis are anything other than incredible, but I focus completely on Blackwell when I listen to this concert.

Eric Dolphy – Cophenhagen Concert – My least favorite of these records, but still, it’s wonderful.  Chuck Israels – who I adore on Bill Evans recordings – sounds fantastic.  But most of the record is made up of lesser-known Danish musicians.  They are great, don’t get me wrong, but compared to the line-up of the previous two records, this one is a bit more pale.

The Doobie Brothers – Best of The Doobies– It’s great.  Not Eric Dolphy great…or, Great, but great, nonetheless.

The Doobie Brothers – Best of The Doobies, Vol. II – Another really great one.  Actually, I like this a little better than the first one – the writing is much better, especially tunes like “What a Fool Believes,” which is an incredible composition.

The Doors – The Doors – First record by them.  Epic.

Best, R.
