Hello and happy start of autumn!
In my last missive, I mentioned a heavy duty fall concert schedule, along with the start of my promotion to Professor, and a very hip video that Berklee and I made. I failed to mention the new Adidas Superstars that I bought to celebrate.
Well, here’s the video! This brief talk on functional harmony, modal interchange, and the harmonic budget is a glimpse into how we do things in my classroom. You may not know that I teach in the Harmony and Jazz Composition Department at Berklee, and not the Bass Department. It’s a blessing to be able to work on such a wide variety of music, and from so many varied perspectives. It has been so exciting to see the view and engagement numbers grow on this video! I hope you dig it!
In addition to MANY great upcoming shows, there are two big projects to talk about, but I can't quite talk about both (yet - check out December 17, below). First, a few dates:
- September 18 - NEW - Returning to Dave Bryant’s Third Thursdays at the Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge. This will be VERY high energy.
- October 15 - Rick McLaughlin Trio @ Mad Monkfish in Cambridge - featuring Sheryl Bailey and Yoron Israel
- November 16 - Triptych Project - a new piano trio project I am involved in, with Joe Mulholland and Alberto Netto - performing at Mad Monkfish in Cambridge.
- December 17 - for the 40th anniversary of the Either/Orchestra, we are returning to Regattabar!
And, there is still one more project that I’m waiting to announce. November 9 is the date - mark your calendars. It's going to be fantastic.
Looking forward to seeing you at an upcoming show!
Rick
