“Sometimes”, Mimi Rabson, 2014

“Sometimes” from Mimi Rabson’s 2014 CD Music

I loved being on this record because it was right in my zone: searching, experimenting, curious, looking to expand beyond the preconceptions of style, maybe even looking to break the time/space continuum if possible.  Mimi was the perfect musician to look for ways of breaking that continuum, not just because she’s a killer violinist and composer/arranger and all around great musician, but also because of her electric violin and awesome effects.  Every now and then, it felt like what I imagine the Are You Experienced sessions might have felt like…musically speaking,

Anyway, at that time, I had been working a lot with Harvey Wirht, the amazing drummer who is now doing great things in NYC, and David Harris, the composer/trombone player/now tuba-ist/my colleague at Berklee.  Mimi got my name from Dave (easy thing to happen what with the two of them having been married since sometime in the 1980s?), and she called me.  Most of the record is on electric bass: my Alembic Series I, which I have since sold, and my first bass, a Yamaha fretless.  This track was on double bass.  AND, check out Dennis Montgomery, III!  Man, he sounds amazing!
