The Monstrous Mashups

When The Beatles released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, it flipped pretty much everyone out. The kids loved it. The adults hated it. Frank Zappa thought that it was stolen from side four of Freak Out!. Brian Wilson went into a depression, followed by a brilliant retaliation in the form of Pet Sounds, followed by…well, you know what followed that. It certainly was a graveyard smash, and a decade later it helped spark the term rockism, but not in a good kind of way.

Well, now it’s 40 years later and Mashuptown is wondering about Sgt. Pepper’s mid-life crisis. I already told you how much I like mashups, but this just sends me over the edge. It’s totally great.

In particular, I like:

  • Pinnochiohead on LSD – totally, totally weird and awesome
  • The Word is Good – starring The Clash
  • She’s Slipping
  • It’s Far Too Late – this one reminds me a bit of the “new” Beatles CD Love. Mix one part Beatles with much Jim Morrison, and then a hearty thank you to Ray Manzarek.
  • Being for the Benefit of P-Funk
  • Good Pressure
  • A Karma in the Life – Karma Police meets A Day In the Life
  • A Day in the Life of My Son – starring Genesis…post Peter…post Disney Genesis
  • Dr. Peppers Open Heart Club Sandwich

So maybe I’m a little nutty in the head. Perhaps my mind is not quite as sharp as it used to be. Or, alternatively, I’m just incredible at multitasking and so used to thinking about and listening to multiple pieces of music simultaneously. These are some of the reasons why I love mashups. Did I mention that I love mashups?

Thanks,

Rick
